Dempster Therapeutic Services Educate Parents on Milestones and Red Flags of Speech and Language Development

Dempster Therapeutic Services LLC is an Illinois-based speech therapy clinic offering premium face-to-face therapy services in Chicago and surrounding suburbs.

Children grow and develop at their own pace. That’s a fact. What’s normal for one baby or toddler may be abnormal for another. And while young children can reach milestones at different ages, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says parents should talk to a licensed speech therapist and consider an early-intervention evaluation if the child displays any of these signs or has a dramatic loss of skills.

Andrzej Lewandowski, MHS, MA, CCC-SLP/L, PEL, Polskojęzyczny Logopeda w Chicago®

Bilingual (Polish and English-speaking) speech therapist at Dempster Therapeutic Services is an award-winning Illinois Early Intervention credentialed speech therapy provider and a certified member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and has worked in multiple settings ranging from schools to private practices.

All therapists at Dempster work closely with families to help children find the best treatment plan for their needs. Andrzej shares his expertise with parents on important milestones and red flags regarding speech and language development in babies, stating:

“Babies change and grow a lot during their first few months of life. The average newborn gains 5 to 7 ounces a week. They also grow 1/2 inch to 1 inch each month. In short, your baby is getting bigger before your eyes. They are also developing new skills. But if your little one doesn’t respond to loud noises, doesn’t babble, or try to imitate sounds, it could be a sign that something is wrong with their speech or language development.”

Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics revised developmental milestones, aiming to make it easier for parents, caregivers, and healthcare providers to spot certain conditions more accurately. Regarding the importance of developmental milestones, Andrzej states:

“By your child’s first birthday, they’ve probably changed a lot—physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally. Developmental milestones are a set of functional skills or age-specific tasks most children can do by a certain age. But if you have any concerns and/or if your child doesn’t say “mama” or “dada”, or any other single words; doesn’t use gestures, such as shaking head “no”, or doesn’t point to objects or pictures, you may want to speak to a licensed speech therapist.

Andrzej points out that children experience drastic transformations between the age of 1 and 2, stating:

“Ah, toddlerhood. There’s nothing quite like it. Most 2-year-olds crawl, walk and talk. They are also balls of energy—running, jumping, and simply going 100 miles a minute. But if your child is struggling physically, socially, or emotionally, you may want to speak to an early intervention-accredited speech therapist.”

If a toddler doesn’t speak at least 15 words; doesn’t use two-word sentences; doesn’t imitate actions or words, or doesn’t follow simple instructions, Andrzej Lewandowski recommends that parents pay a visit to a licensed speech therapist.

Andrzej shares that by the age of 3, the baby should be able to understand and exhibit basic forms of communication, stating:

“Can you believe your baby is 3? Thirty-six months have passed since your wee one was born. But if your toddler has incoherent speech, can’t communicate in short phrases, doesn’t engage in pretend play, doesn’t understand simple instructions, shows no interest in other children, and/or makes poor eye contact, you may want to speak with their pediatrician and/or speech therapist.”
