Ungalahli Ithemba - Insights into a life with a rare disease

“Ungalahli Itemba” by Sonja Böckmann
With her book “Ungalahli Itemba”, Sonja Böckmann raises awareness for a disease that hardly anyone knows about.

Syringomyelia is a word only very few people have ever heard. Almost everyone else doesn’t know that a rare disease is hiding behind these letters. Even doctors have issues with diagnosing it, which can lead to real issues for people who suffer from this disease. The author Sonja Böckmann made exactly that experience when she was sent from one doctor to another after a car accident on the way to work. Nobody seemed to know what was wrong with her, and nobody seemed to take her complaints seriously. Some doctors even called her a hypochondriac and sent her away. But to the author, her complaints were very real. She suffered from balance disorders, insensations and constant pain. Standing for long periods of time and even sitting were hardly possible for her. It took almost a whole year before the diagnosis of syringomyelia is made for the first time. Syringomyelia is a rare disease in which fluid-filled gaps (“cavities”) form in the spinal cord or the spinal canal widens.

In the book “Ungalahli Ithemba” by Sonja Böckmann shares her experiences with the disease that does not yet has a cure. She explains that only physiotherapy and pain therapy can help with easing the pain. Readers follow her on her odyssey through medical specialties, offices, professional associations, insurances and authorities. With her book, she would like to encourage other people not to resign in the face adversity, but to fight for themselves and their health needs. At the same time, she would like to increase awareness of the two rare neurological diseases Chiari malformation and syringomyelia. The importance of widespread education is demonstrated by her own story of how difficult it is to be taken seriously with physical illness and blatant pain and symptoms.
